ABOUT US: PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

June 2009

In 1934 during the Great Depression the discovery of gold led to the formation of Yellowknife. Named after the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, this growing and vibrant city will celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding this year. And while this is a noteworthy event for residents of the Northwest Territories there is another related and significant anniversary being celebrated in Canada. On February 23, 1909 the Silver Dart made its famous flight at Baddeck Bay, Nova Scotia. The development of this aircraft was the result of the efforts of the Aerial Experiment Association formed in 1907 by Alexander Graham Bell. So 2009 also marks the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada.

How fitting that these two historic events should come to be celebrated in the same year because they are as intertwined as any of mankind's accomplishments. The discovery of gold, diamonds and other minable substances could not have been achieved had the Wright Brothers not pursued their dream of powered flight. Prospecting, search and rescue, manhunts, medivacs, mail service and the development of the North in general have been possible in large measure due to the gift of flight. Without the ability to accomplish these important activities in a safe and timely manner without the benefit of roads or other viable means of transportation one wonders what how different the North would look today.

Given the close association of powered flight and the formation of the city of Yellowknife it seems only appropriate that Canadian North should be the official airline sponsor of Yellowknife’s 75th anniversary. We have long established our headquarters in the city and are delighted to be a key participant in the celebration of its birthday. We look forward to seeing you on board to help celebrate during Yellowknife's homecoming from June 19 to July 4 and throughout the rest of the year.

Travel well.
