Carry-On Baggage Allowance

Under Seat Stowage:

No more than two (2) pieces which when combined do not exceed 23cm x 41cm x 57cm (9” x 16” x 22.5”).

Overhead Bin Stowage:

One of the following items per passenger may be stowed in the overhead bins:

one (1) soft-sided, single suit garment bag which, when folded in half does not exceed: 23cm x 41cm x 57cm (9” x 16” x 22.5”)
One (1) briefcase not exceeding 11 cm (4.5”) in thickness
One (1) laptop not exceeding 11 cm (4.5”) in thickness
One (1) purse not exceeding 11cm (4.5”) in thickness
No single piece should exceed 10 kg (22Ibs)

Additionally, the following personal items may be carried in the cabin, space permitting:

An overcoat
An umbrella or walking stick
A reasonable amount of reading material for use in-flight
An approved infant restraint device
Infant food for consumption in flight
A small camera or pair of binoculars
A prosthetic device

Canadian North may require that proposed carry-on baggage be checked as checked baggage due to space limitations in the cabin of the aircraft.

Special Considerations

Cremated Human Remains

Canadian North will accept cremated human remains as long as the carry-on baggage allowance is not exceeded. A copy of the death certificate and cremation certificate must be shown to both the check-in agent and security screening personnel.

Crutches

Most crutches have a mechanism for shortening by means of loosening of butterfly nut or bolt or other means, enabling them to be stowed and accessible from the overhead bin.

Electronic Devices

The following articles may be carried on board provided they meet carry-on baggage rules with respect to the number of pieces, dimensions, weight and storage and provided they are not operated on board during flight; portable, cellular, or satellite telephones; portable televisions; transmitters; portable radios; and any other device as mentioned by the flight crew.

Live Animals

Live animals will be accepted as carry-on baggage (PETC) with a service charge of $65.00 (plus GST/provincial taxes) each, provided the following is met:

Minimum 24 hours advance notice is required, and is subject to space availability. Applies to flights operated by Canadian North only. Passengers must make direct arrangements with other carrier if transferring to another airline.
Passengers cannot purchase an extra seat for PETC and pets accepted in the cabin cannot be strapped into a seat. Passengers with pets must not be seated at the bulkhead or in an exit row.
Animals must be harmless, inoffensive, odorless, and require no attention during transit. Animals cannot be removed from kennel at any time while onboard the aircraft.
Acceptable animals include small domestic dogs and cats, birds, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, hedgehogs, and chinchillas. All other types including reptiles, snakes, lizards, turtles, rats, mice, ferrets, and weasels are not permitted and must be referred to Canadian North Air Cargo.
Animals must be contained in a passenger supplied kennel which is large enough for the animal to stand in a natural position, turn around and lie down. The kennel must be able to fit under the aircraft seat (23 cm x 41 cm x 57 cm/9” x 16” x 22.5”) and provide good ventilation from two or more sides, with a leak-proof bottom. Hard-sided plastic and soft-sided kennels will be accepted. Cardboard boxes will not be permitted.
Kennels may carry 2 dogs or 2 cats (must be the same species) only if they are between 8 weeks to 6 months and they must be small enough to fit in 1 kennel with adequate ventilation and room to move about. Dogs and cats over 6 months old must be in individual kennels. Multiple compatible birds of any age may fly together provided there is adequate room to move about.
Passengers will be permitted one cabin kennel as part of their carry-on allotment. However, there is a limit of five (5) kennels accepted as PETC on any given flight. This does not include any service animals that may be on board.

Strollers and Bassinets

A stroller or bassinet may be accepted as cabin baggage provided it can be stowed in an approved compartment*.

Strollers and basinets are not generally considered part of a customer's carry-on allotment, but depending on the size and space available in the cabin, they may be carried onboard.
Umbroller type strollers exceed the maximum size of cabin baggage but will be allowed provided that:
- It's the basic model, without a sunroof or carry rack, and can be folded;
- Dimensions do not exceed 15 cm x 15 cm x 100 cm (6” x 6” x 40”)
- The passenger has been given a window seat, not in emergency exit row.

Wheelchairs

A wheelchair will be accepted as baggage or freight*.

* Space permitting, a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a fully collapsible walker may be accepted as Carry-On Baggage.

Cabin Seat Baggage / Extra Seat

A passenger can request that an extremely fragile, expensive and/or bulky item of baggage (deemed acceptable as carry-on by Canadian North) be carried in the passenger cabin, but its nature is such as to require the use of a seat, the provisions below will apply:

The extra seat must be adjacent to the passenger. No meal will be provided for such a seat.
Each passenger may carry on board baggage that is fragile, expensive and/or bulky in nature as to require the blocking or use of an adjacent seat or seats, provided that the weight and size of such baggage shall not be included in determining the passenger's free baggage allowance or excess baggage charges.
Canadian North will charge 50% of the YNORTH fare or 100% of the HNORTH, VNORTH, or MNORTH fare based on the first seat sold.
In the case of denied boarding compensation, passenger(s) who have purchased an extra seat are in-eligible from collecting compensation for such a seat.
Must be placed at window seat, not in an emergency exit, and not in the first or last row. However, it may extend across adjacent seats but cannot block the aisle. Seat back must remain in an upright position.
Must be packed and covered in a manner to avoid possible injury to passengers. Must be properly secured by means of approved cargo nets or herc straps. Seat belts and seat belt extensions are forbidden to be used.
Cannot exceed seat dimensions of 46 cm x 60 cm x 43 cm (18” x 17” x 23”), except for a cello, and seat weight of 165 lbs (75 kg).

The carry-on policy of the airline operating the flight you are traveling on applies and is specific to the type of aircraft operated.
