NorTerra Inc.

NorTerra may be the only company in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut on the National Post’s list of the Top 500 Canadian companies. That in itself makes it unique. What is really intriguing about this company is the fact that it was born out of the first two land claim settlements in the Northwest Territories, and is a partnership of the Inuvialuit Development Corporation (IDC) in the Northwest Territories and Nunasi Corporation (Nunasi) of Nunavut. Because both companies have equal ownership, and equal representation on the NorTerra Board, it operates with a consensus Board. This creates a different dynamic than most Boards of other Top 500 companies.

The company began when the Government of Canada decided to divest itself of Northern Transportation Company Limited (NTCL). With the partnership of the IDC and Nunasi, NorTerra made a bid to buy NTCL in 1985. NorTerra’s current holdings include three companies: NTCL, Canadian North Airlines (operated by Air NorTerra Inc.), and Weldco-Beales Manufacturing Inc.

NorTerra’s mission is to contribute to the business objectives of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement for the benefit of their Inuit and Inuvialuit Beneficiaries – the Inuvialuit of the NWT and the Inuit of Nunavut.

NorTerra is committed to maximizing return on investment for its shareholders and providing employment and training opportunities for its Inuit and Inuvialuit Beneficiaries.

Northern Transportation Company Limited (NTCL)

Northern Transportation Company Limited (NTCL) is the founding member of the NorTerra Group of Companies. From humble beginnings with wooden tugs and barges at Waterways, Alberta, the company has grown to become Canada’s only pan-Arctic supplier of marine transportation. It offers complete dry cargo and fuel delivery services to communities, oil and gas exploration projects and mining sites throughout the western Arctic, Mackenzie River, Alaskan North Slope, Hudson Bay and eastern Arctic regions.

Providing a lifeline to and throughout the North, NTCL has established regional offices, agencies and terminals to serve its customers. In addition to marine transportation systems covering over 11,000 kilometers, the company offers a broad range of related industrial services. These include fuel sourcing and supply and logistics management, the latter through NTCL’s involvement in the Inuvialuit Northern Logistics (INL) joint venture. Eastern Arctic communities receive complete dry cargo sealift services through the company’s partnership (known as the N3 Alliance) with NorTran Inc. and Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc. NTCL also provides a variety of industrial and mechanical services at its Hay River shipyard, including marine maintenance and repair, steel fabrication, machining, electronics supply and service and oil spill containment supplies.
